spa etiquette

By Tanya M. Williams, L.M.B.T.

Though the industry has boomed in the last decade, there are still many individuals who have never experienced a spa treatment. To those unfamiliar with the environment, spas can be intimidating and anxiety inducing, just the opposite of their purpose!

Q: I've never been to a spa and received a gift certificate for my birthday. What treatment(s) do you recommend? Can I choose my therapist?

A: Most first-timers opt for a massage or a facial; both provide a solid introduction to spa life. If the spa offers several varieties of each, the receptionist can advise you on the most appropriate choice. Receptionists generally ask if you have a therapist preference. If you know of one specifically, feel free to request him or her. If not, consider whether you'd prefer a male or a female. If you have any kind of medical condition or are pregnant, mention that as well.  This enables the staff to match you with the therapist best suited for your needs.
