The Magic Number 50

In the National Council of Women's Organizations' guide, Fifty Ways to Improve Women's Lives (Inner Ocean Publishing, 2005), some of the most prominent women in the world discuss the issues facing women today. From protecting reproductive rights and stopping domestic violence to supporting women and girls in sports and eradicating racism, this heart-felt compilation addresses critical issues and includes a “Call to Action” at the end of each chapter, discussing ways in which we can personally get involved. These are challenging, timely issues, and by reading this guide you'll find ways in which you can participate on a grass-roots level. See page 8 to enter to win your own copy!

Fifty truly seems like a magic number in Siimon Reynolds delightful book Better Than Chocolate—50 Proven Ways to Feel Happier (Ten Speed Press, 2005). Each suggestion is accompanied by Jenny Kostecki's playful illustrations, creating an almost child-like book with a very big message. The suggestion, “Make a Happiness List,” asks you to create a list of everything that makes you happy from the most everyday experiences to the most indulgent. Afterward, Reynolds suggests that you incorporate at least one of these activities into your routine every day. His tips range from the medical (try a low-insulin diet) to the emotional (ask uplifting questions) to the obviously enjoyable (kiss someone), allowing you to create your own repertoire of happiness techniques.
