Frankenfoods, or those that have been modified or altered in someway, are finding their way into the most natural of food stores. Unfortunately you have to be a sleuth to find out what you’re eating. Here is our cheat sheet for eating as natural as you can:
- Follow the PLU. The little sticker on produce tells you quite a bit about your produce. If the code is five-digits and starts with a 9, it is organic (i.e. 94011 is for organic bananas.) If it starts with an 8 it is genetically modified. All other numbers are conventionally farmed foods.
- Look for organics in the bulk section. Unfortunately organic nuts and seeds are pricier than their conventional counterparts, but with the proliferation of GMOs, you can’t determine what you’re buying unless it says organics.
- Same rule applies for packaged foods. The best rule? Skip the packaged foods all together and learn to bake some of your favorites (i.e. tortilla chips, fruit leathers, etc.). Otherwise, look for organics.
