When it comes to making a relationship work, knowing yourself and your partner is the first step. The Indian life science of Ayurveda categorizes personality types, or doshas, into three basic types: vata, pitta, and kapha. The vata element is dry and airy. Pitta is hot and fiery, while kapha is cool and earthy.
Dr. Robert Svoboda, a leading Ayurvedic expert, claims that having the right mix of personality types is key to a good intimate relationship. When partners of the same type are living in health and balance, they'll flourish. But two imbalanced people of the same type may find themselves exacerbating each other's sore spots.
For example, two pittas might find themselves in a highly creative and productive relationship or be at each other's throats. A vata couple can stimulate one another or send each other over the edge. And kaphas can work wonderfully together when both are balanced and motivated; if not, Svoboda warns, they "will reinforce their mutual, natural tendencies to sloth, and mutually go to seed."
Take the following quiz to find out whether you and your partner are a case of likes attracting like, or opposites attracting. To find out more about balancing your dosha (and helping your mate come into balance) check out Svoboda's modern guide Ayurveda for Women: A Guide to Vitality and Health (Healing Arts Press, 2000).
And if you're single, consider replacing the old 'What's your sign?' with 'What's your dosha?'
Take this short quiz to determine your dosha, and if relevant, have your partner do the same.
