Green & Glowing

Many a city dweller knows the struggle of stepping from the day-spa door wrapped up in dreamy serenity, only to have her blissful bubble burst once she’s forced to face grueling traffic, swarming sidewalks, or a frightful taxi ride. A much welcomed addition to the gridlock-plagued Los Angeles spa scene, the new GreenBliss ecospa brings a full menu of spa treatments right to your home or hotel room. And with that cozy convenience comes a more impactful benefit: All their offerings—from the Green Tea & White Clay Youth Booster Body Mask to the Espresso Mud Scrub & Crème de la Crème Body Moisturizing Massage—use products that are organic, sustainably harvested, sourced from local artisans or small businesses, and/or fair trade. What’s more, a portion of proceeds from each service goes toward groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Children’s Health Environmental Coalition. Launched in May 2006, GreenBliss aims to educate clients about easy ways to embrace eco-friendly products and practices every day. “I want to challenge the notion that if something’s good for the planet, it can’t be all that effective. A product can be luxury and green at the same time,” says founder Randi Ragan, a former yoga teacher and documentary filmmaker. In the interest of a little pleasurable persuasion, Ragan and her estheticians select deeply indulgent products for services like the Bamboo and Lemongrass Hawaiian Body Polish and Pure Results Organic Facial. “You have to lure the skeptics with amazing aromas and textures,” says Ragan. “The ingredients in the Naturopathica line, for example, are so exquisite that you become a junkie for the stuff. Once you’ve experienced products like that, you can’t go back to what you used before.”
