Spa Etiquette

By Tanya M. Williams, L.M.B.T.

Dear Tanya,

How long can I linger on the table after the massage therapist leaves the treatment room?

Charles Triber, Asheville, NC

Give yourself a few minutes to breathe deeply and then move slowly as you get off the table and begin to get dressed. Although it would be nice to roll over and have a nap, most spas schedule appointments fifteen minutes apart, giving the therapist not much more than a few extra minutes to thank and say goodbye to one client before receiving another. Often, the therapist is also responsible for changing out the room, that is, removing the linens and cleaning up, if needed, before the next appointment. So, while it's not necessary to rush (and not advisable, since massage and other bodywork can lower your blood pressure and leave you light-headed) it is considerate to keep this timeline in mind. Most establishments have relaxation areas or sitting rooms where you can extend your resting period before re-entering the 'real' world.
