Miami’s Wellness Offerings Heat Up

Once primarily the domain of the nip-and-tuck crowd, multi-cultural Miami is emerging as a spa destination with a more holistic approach to wellness. At the posh Mandarin Oriental overlooking Biscayne Bay, you can embark on a themed healing journey offered in a private, beautifully appointed suite in the elegant spa. Exclusive to the Miami property, the Kundalini Journey melds ancient massage techniques with energy work, aromatherapy, and gemstone therapy. In a room bathed in soothing blue light, Tibetan bowls ring as therapists offer guests a selection of gemstones—creating a highly individual healing experience. A heady fusion of frangipani, jasmine, and mandarin essential oils and a mélange of massage techniques are utilized to release tension and rebalance energy. To culminate the experience, each guest is gifted with a semi-precious gemstone necklace designed by Miami’s Cynthia Lynn.

Coconut Grove has always had a reputation for offering the ultimate in shopping therapy, but the opening of the new Mayfair Hotel & Spa (with the city’s first and only Jurlique spa) has taken this area to a whole new level. Sample the signature Harmony Massage; after choosing from an assortment of blended oils that includes a muscle-pleasing combination of arnica and birch, you’ll be stretched, rubbed, rolled, and acupressured into a state of sublime bliss.

If you’ve ever assumed a sports-themed destination hotel can’t be posh, it’s time to visit Shula’s Hotel & Golf Club, named for football coaching legend Don Shula. Glide past the sports memorabilia in the lobby and head directly for the comfortable new Aveda concept spa, featuring an impressive selection of treatments. Sample the Rosemary Mint Awakening Body Wrap, which incorporates the essences of peppermint and rosemary in a soothing wrap and concludes with a scalp and foot massage.

Across town in the epicenter of South Beach, the ultra-healthy, uber-hip afterglo restaurant is earning accolades for its menu of “beauty cuisine,” highlighting raw ingredients and dishes based on pH levels, elemental content, anti-inflammatory properties, and a full color spectrum. Sounds pretty healthy to us.
