Saving Women's Lives

While we know it's important to embrace a healthy lifestyle to keep our hearts functioning at optimal levels, a recent study from the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners says women may be their own worst enemies.

The study looked at perceived barriers to exercise, how women often give up before they even start, believing they don't have the time to workout because other commitments have priority (meeting work deadlines, family obligations, cooking dinner, etc.).

The study's lead author, Joanne L. Thanavaro, RN, ND, associate professor of nursing at Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing and Allied Health, suggests that before committing to any exercise program, it's essential to make a realistic evaluation of your lifestyle, time constraints, and personal and professional obligations.

Next, schedule exercise appointments into your calendar at least three days a week, and honor them just as you would any other appointment. And don't underestimate the value of having an exercise buddy. "Women do best when their exercise regimen involves socializing with others", says Thanavaro. "Be sure to develop your exercise program around something you enjoy. Walk, roller blade, or ice skate with a friend; then go have coffee."
