Spa Etiqutte

By Tanya M. Williams, L.M.B.T.

Dear Tanya,

Recently I had to miss my facial appointment due to a last minute work crisis. The spa charged me for the appointment anyway, what's up with that?

Unfortunately, this is one of those lose-lose' situations. You miss your appointment, they miss out on your business. Not knowing the specific details of your situation, I'll just comment on cancellations in general. Most spas have clearly defined cancellation policies, of which you should be informed or ask about at the time you make your appointment. Generally speaking, cancellations are fine with ample notice, usually 12-24 hours. Often, last minute cancellations or no shows' are charged full price because the treatment room and the therapist's time have been reserved for you. Not showing up or canceling at the last moment prohibits the business from filling your spot with another client and (if they don't charge) usually means the therapist loses out on whatever income plus tip that appointment would have provided. And though some businesses hold firm to their policies, if you have a true emergency or fall ill chances are good the spa will make an exception and happily reschedule your appointment for you. But be conscientious, if you're the sort of person who frequently has to change plans, make your spa appointments on days that tend to be less hectic, and be sure to ask about last minute cancellations. It will spare you and the establishment from an unnecessary headache.
