Relaxing Song

Continued from our Retreat & Renew Daily Tip.

Commissioned by Radox Spa, a bath and shower gel company, the 8-minute track entitled
Weightless is purported to be more relaxing than a massage, a walk, or a cup of tea.

Weightless contains a rhythm that starts at 60 beats a minute and gradually decreases to 50 beats per minute.  The theory is that your heart rate, and consequently your blood pressure, fall to meet that rhythm via a process called “entrainment.”

Brainwave Entrainment refers to the brain’s electrical response to rhythmic sensory stimulation, such as pulses of sound or light. When the brain is given a stimulus, through the ears, eyes or other senses, it emits an electrical charge in response, called a Cortical Evoked Response. These electrical responses travel throughout the brain to become what you “see and hear.” This activity can be measured using sensitive electrodes attached to the scalp.

Weightless also lacks a repeating melody which aids in relaxation since the brain is no longer trying to predict what’s to come.

A study of 40 women (sponsored by Radox Spa) found Weightless to be more relaxing than tunes by artists like Enya and Mozart (doesn’t get much more calming then that), and motorists have been warned not to drive while listening to the song. You be the judge but Healing Lifestyles & Spas recommends putting the car in park before listening just in case!
