What is a consumer to do in order to buy local and organic? Our best suggestion is to know your farmer.
Or shop wisely. Oftentimes, you can find an organic and local option, especially during the warmer months. If you love tomatoes, buy more now and chop, freeze, make salsa, or make pasta sauce. You’ll have an organic option that is seasonal and local.
You can also invest in your local community through your CSA (double-check its farming practices) throughout the winter. Many CSAs offer winter shares, fruit shares, and even foods for canning. Our food supply doesn’t have to be in the hands of the corporations, it can be in yours.

The Truth About Your Food
Its tough to diss the natural food industry when it has done so much for our food supply, but at the same time as any industry grows the chances of things being swept under the carpet (or soil) increases. Unfortunately this is true for the organic industry.
Before you tote your bag off to the market, be sure to take note of these things.
First and foremost, just because you find it at the Farmer’s Market or in a CSA, or at Whole Foods, doesn’t mean it is organic. You can go to the
National Organic Program to find out if what you’re buying is organic.
Second. There is a difference between supporting local and supporting organic. And oftentimes you may need to choose which is more important to you. Local foods support your community, are transported fewer miles, leaving behind a smaller carbon footprint. Yet, organic foods are free of pesticides and GMOs. As the organic industry grows, large corporations have wanted a piece of the pie, and have taken over many of the early organic companies. So although your granola may be organic, it may be owned by Pepsi.
