When To Pitch Your Products

Continued from our Retreat & Renew Daily Tip.

Wondering just how long you can hold onto that mascara?

You’d never bite into food that had passed its expiration date, but would you put expired ingredients on your face? Many of us do, unknowingly!

A new trend we love in natural products is a freshness date (‘cause let’s face it, many natural products are food-based) that lets you know just when a formula is past its prime.

Here’s your guide to product expiration dates:

  • Mascara passes its prime after just 3 months. And if you notice a change in smell or consistency before that, it’s time for a replacement.

  • Those delicate lip gloss wands are perfect for precise application, but they harbor lots of bacteria- toss lip gloss after 1 year.

  • Most skin care is good for 6 months after opening, sometimes longer. To keep a tub of lotion fresh and germ-free, scoop it out with a spoon or a small beauty spatula.

  • Eyeliner pencils stay fresh for 2 years, partly because you reveal a new layer every time you sharpen. For good measure, keep your sharpener clean and sanitized.
